Anise is an Annual bushy type plant that grows to approx. 50cm.
It produces feathery light green leaves that have a sweet distinct aniseed flavour.
On the Continent, especially in Germany, many cakes have an aniseed flavouring, and Anise is also used as a flavouring for soups. It is largely used in France, Spain Italy and South America in the preparation of cordial liqueurs. The liqueur Anisette added to cold water on a hot summer's day, makes a lovely refreshing drink.
The aromatic seedpods are commonly known as Aniseed; they have a spicy liquorice flavour that is often used in drinks, teas, desserts, breads and confectionery.
