Cynara scolymus
The Green Globe Artichoke is a Perennial from the Western Mediterranean.
The plants look similar to thistles with silvery grey leaves. Large green flower heads are eaten as a nutritious gourmet vegetable. It is also used as an ornamental.
Cut buds when heads are tight (before opening), boil until tender. It grows to approx. 1.5 metre tall and 1 metre across within five years. Globe artichoke needs to be dug and divided every 3-4 years.
Sow approx. 10mm, Spring or after frost. Globe artichoke has a restricted climatic range and prefers cool, moist summers and mild winters. Chilling is needed to produce the heads. Full sun, well drained alkaline soil rich in compost and well rotted animal manure.
