Ashwaganda is an adaptogenic evergreen or herbaceous shrub that’s popular in Ayurvedic medicine and has been used for more than 2,500 years.  Native to Africa, India, Middle East and the Orient.

The term Ayurveda comes from two Indian words: ayur (life) and veda (knowledge). Ayurvedic medicine is thus described as a 'knowledge of how to live', emphasising that good health is the responsibility of the individual.

Sow in Spring indoors, onto surface and keep moist until germination.  Warm soil required for successful germination.  Germination approx. 15 days.  Space 30cm apart– the plant grows approx. 60-80cm tall, producing the lantern-like pods enclosing pea-sized fruit, green at first and becoming bright red as the inflated calyx dries and becomes transparent.  Ashwagandha prefers full sun, fast-draining, alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.0) soil and fairly dry conditions.
