This is a dwarf variety of  Banksia ashbyi, known as Golden Banksia.

It is a shrub form which grows to approx. 1.5m high x 2m wide. Flowers are bright yellow-orange during Autumn and Winter, and are ideal for cut flower production given their stunning colour. Leaves are serrated.

This species is native to the mid-west coastal plains of Western Australia.

Prefers well-drained sandy soils. Avoid waterlogged soils. Drought and frost resistant. Does well as an under-storey plant.  Like all Banksia's, it is excellent for attracting honey eating birds.

Seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in mild climates, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year.  Sow the seed to the depth of the seed size.  Keep moist but not wet as the seed may rot if soil medium is too wet.  Keep damp between watering.  Germination approx. 21-60 days depending on the temperature and conditions.

Many species of the Proteaceae family are responsive to pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination will often occur without smoke treatment it has proven to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in some species of the Proteaceae family.  Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken either by soaking the seed overnight or by applying to the surface after sowing.
