Xerochrysum bracteatum

Native to Australia, the Everlasting Daisy or Paper Daisy, or Straw Flower can be grown as an annual or short lived perennial herbaceous shrub growing to approx. 90cm high, with multiple branches and large, soft and sometimes sticky leaves. The flowers attract butterflies, moths and many other insects, providing an important food source for them.

The plant produces large flowers featuring golden orange centres and papery textured petals in a mixture of colours which includes shades of red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Great for native gardens, container plantings, garden beds, borders, coastal areas and rockeries.

It is easy to grow, low maintenance, tolerant of poor soil conditions and drought. Makes a lovely cut or dried flower lasting a very long time. The plant produces flowers over a long period from Spring through to Autumn.

Sow seed 1mm deep, moist well drained soil in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Full sun, seeds need light to germinate.  Germination approx. 7 - 14 days.  Matures approx. 80 days.

For best results, prune the growing tips regularly during establishment to encourage a bushy habit with more flower heads.  This plant grows best with regular watering and the addition of a slow release fertiliser suited to native plants.

Remove the spent flower heads to promote more flowers and extend the flowering period.  Prune back after flowering to encourage renewed bushy growth.
