Coprosma quadrifida

The Native Currant Bush is endemic to NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.  It grows well in damp sites in open woodland, sclerophyll forest, cool moist rainforest areas, generally along creeks.  Once matured this shrub reaches a height of between 2 - 4 metres.  Partial to full shade, frost tolerant.  Prickly habitat plant ideal for shaded gardens, and attractive to native bird-life.

Single insignificant male & female flowers appear at the end of short branchlets on separate plants (dioecious). Sweet edible red fruit, around 7mm long, is produced abundantly from January to March.

The fruit was eaten raw by Indigenous people, and made into puddings by the first Australian settlers.  It is also ideal to be added to salads as a tasty addition.

Soak seeds overnight before sowing.  Sow immediately, seed does not store for long periods of time, or refrigerate at approx. 4 deg C.  Seedlings usually appear in flush of germination, from 2 - 5 months after sowing, depending on temperature.
