Brassica oleracea var. italica
Green Sprouting Calabrese Broccoli produces medium sized dark green heads. The plant will continue producing side shoots for several weeks after the main flower head is cut. Slow to bolt variety.
Great steamed, roasted with a little oil or stir-fried, it is an extremely versatile kitchen garden staple.
Sow 5mm deep, late Summer - Autumn. Full or part sun, well drained soil. When the heads get large, plants can be staked to stop them from falling over. A good mulch will also maintain soil temperature and encourage growth. Harvest the main head whilst it is still tightly shaped. It is best to cut the stem approx. 10-12cm below the head.
