Calendula Officinalis

Calendula, or pot marigold, comes from southern Europe. This old-fashioned Pacific Beauty variety is a delightful blend of yellow, orange and golden flowers.

Annual flower, to approx. 80cm high. It flowers for a long period during Winter and Spring, especially if the spent flowers are removed regularly.

Calendula will tolerate most soils, although it prefers a moderate to rich loam. It is often highly valued for its medicinal uses, and especially in skin creams to heal cuts, insect bites and abrasions. The flower petals can be used as a substitute for saffron and are edible.

Sow late Summer and Autumn, approx. 15mm deep in moist seed raising medium. It takes approx 8-10 weeks from sowing seed to flowering. Suitable for temperate and subtropical areas.
