Symphytum officinale
Comfrey is a frost hardy Perennial herb originating from Europe. It is also known as knitbone. The plants have large hairy leaves and produce stems up to 1m in height with white to mauve coloured bell-shaped flowers.
Comfrey is often used to improve soil quality. These plants have deep roots which bring nutrients up from deep in the soil and make them available to other shallow rooted plants. The leaves can be used to make a liquid fertiliser, and are also a great compost activator. It is exceptional as a living mulch, and the flowers are highly attractive to bees.
Sow seed approx. 5mm deep, Spring and Autumn. Cold stratification may assist with seed raising. Germination approx. 30 days. Part or full sun, moist well draining fertile soil. Maturity approx. 1 year.
