Citrullus lanatus

Also known as the Preserving Melon, the Red Seeded Citron or commonly called Jam Melon is an Heirloom fruit that has a very high pectin content that is used in jam making.  The fruit skin is hard, dark green and striped, with firm white flesh when cut open.  Stores well, and the vines are very abundant, hardy and drought tolerant.

Sow seed approx. 20mm deep where the vines are to be grown to maturity, Spring and Summer (after the threat of frost has passed) in well drained moist soil.  Germination in approx. 4 - 10 days.  Pinch out growing tips to encourage further branching of the vine, and a more prolific crop. Maturity 110 days.

When fruit is ripening, pop a flat piece of wood under the fruit that is laying on the ground to avoid any rotting from contact with wet soil.

Harvest when the melon end has turned yellow near the stem, and the melon slips easily from the vine.

5 seeds per packet
