The Jojoba (also known as Goatnut) is a perennial evergreen shrub with large nuts that are the source of the valued Jojoba oil. It is native to the deserts of Arizona and Mexico.
It will grow up to approx. 3 metres high with a spread of around 2.5 metres wide. It has leathery, blue-green leaves, flowers are yellow-green in colour. Flowers appear in April (northern hemisph), and occur on the female bush. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants. The nut is edible and tastes a little like a hazelnut.
Jojoba prefers a well-drained soil in an open sunny position, it is drought resistant but frost tender.
Sow seed in late Spring, using high quality seedling medium. Germination approx. 10 - 14 days. Once the plant is well established, deep water in Summer, and fertilise in Spring.
