The Piel de Sapo Melon is also known as the Christmas Melon, and originates from Spain. It is an annual vine, that likes a long, warm growing season. The fruit has a greeny-yellowy skin with deliciously sweet white flesh inside. Stores well.
Sow seed approx. 20mm deep where the vines are to be grown to maturity, Spring and Summer (after the threat of frost has passed) in well drained moist soil. Germination in approx. 4 - 10 days. Pinch out growing tips to encourage further branching of the vine, and a more prolific crop. Maturity 110 days.
When fruit is ripening, pop a flat piece of wood under the fruit that is laying on the ground to avoid any rotting from contact with wet soil.
Harvest when the melon end has turned yellow near the stem, and the melon slips easily from the vine.
