 Tropaeolum nanum

A stunning Nasturtium variety, Empress of India has dark leaves with vibrant red flowers.  A very pretty addition to the kitchen garden as all parts of the plant including the green seed pods are edible. The seed pods can also be used as a caper substitute.

Sow direct where they are to grow. Completely cover seeds with Seed Raising Mix as they require darkness for germination. Firm down, water gently and keep moist through germination period. Transplant seedlings into deep 7.5cm pots to grow on before finally planting with climbing support in a moist, well drained shaded spot or very large pot.

Choose a sunny, well-drained position. Moderately poor soil encourages less leaf and better flowers.  Feed fortnightly for stronger plants.
