The Red Burgundy Onion is a lovely flavourful Heirloom onion that is very popular in India. They have a smooth, glossy skin that is purplish-red in colour with flesh that is white with pink shading. The large, flattened, 7-10cm onions are great sliced on hamburgers, in salads and sandwiches, and through stir fries and curries.
Sow seed, approx. 5mm deep, (into trays) in cool areas sow July; in temperate areas sow mid May - August. Germination approx. 7 - 10 days. Let grow to a good size with decent root growth (approx. 12 weeks), transplant out at 15cm diagonal spacing in fertile soil (less than 1cm deep). Keep well watered to establish. Harvest in approx. 100 - 120 days.
Onions have a surprisingly deep root system, so you need to work the soil deep – at least 25cm – to ensure good drainage. Sorting the drainage is important as the soil will end up compacted due to them being in the ground for a long time.
