Cucurbita Maxima

The Baby Blue Pumpkin is quite a compact Heirloom bush variety originating from USA.  The plants produce small blue-grey pumpkins that grow to approx. 2kg with tough skin and orange flesh.  The pumpkins store well and have a delicious flavour; great for roasting, steaming and in soups.

Pumpkins require a spacious growing area, fences can be used if garden space is limited.

Sow approx. 2cm deep, Spring, full sun, moist well drained very well composted soil, well rotted animal manure is ideal. Adaptable to most good garden soils but prefers a rich soil with a generous amount of water in full sun.  Germination approx. 5 - 10 days.  Maturity approx. 100 days.

Pinching out the growing tip on a pumpkin plant will divert energy and nutrients to the side branches. This stops the vine from sprawling and taking over the garden; it also encourages fruit formation. Harvest Pumpkins when the stem is brown. Pick with a stem approx 5cm long and dry in the sun before storing.
