Black Oil Sunflower are an Heirloom variety popular with poultry and bird owners as the black seeds are often used in bird food because of their high oil content, which is beneficial for nutrition and calories. Also, their thin shells are easier for smaller birds to crack open than other types of sunflower seeds.
Sunflower seeds were brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient.
The plants reach a height of approx. 1.8m tall, and produce a big beautiful yellow flower with black seeds.
To grow best, sunflowers need full sun, no frost. They enjoy fertile, moist, well-drained soil with heavy mulch. Sow seed approx. 6mm deep, direct into the garden bed, Spring and Summer. Seeds take approx. 7 - 14 days to germinate, protect from rodents and birds by covering until the seed has germinated. Flowers mature in approx. 90 - 120 days.
