Mammoth Grey Stripe Sunflower is perhaps the most popular variety of giant sunflower to grow. These towering heirlooms are absolutely awe-inspiring in the garden.
These classic giant sunflowers easily reach 8 - 12 feet in height. The plants have strong stems and the flowers have yellow petals surrounding a brown centre. Mammoth Sunflowers are known for their high quality and abundant sunflower seed oil, and can be grown for bird feed as well as in the kitchen.
Sunflower seeds were brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient.
To grow best, sunflowers need full sun, no frost. They enjoy fertile, moist, well-drained soil with heavy mulch. Sow seed approx. 3mm deep, direct into the garden bed, Spring and Summer. Seeds take approx. 7 - 14 days to germinate, protect from rodents and birds by covering until the seed has germinated. Flowers mature in approx. 90 - 120 days.
