Berkley Tye Dye Green Tomato is an unusual variety that produces very large fruit that are stripey coloured green, yellow and red. Once sliced, the colour continues throughout the flesh of the tomato, very striking and sure to be a talking point over cuisine. The flavour is sweet, then progressing to a sharper tangy bite, as each of the colours has a different flavour resulting in a spicy, sweet, tart tomato with good acid all in one fruit.
It is a climbing (indeterminate) variety and requires staking.
Tomatoes are a warm season crop and do best started off in seedling trays or pots using quality damp seed raising medium. Sow seeds 6mm deep, all year round in tropical regions, July - March in sub-tropical and temperate regions, and Oct - Dec in cool climates. Keep warm and moist and in strong light. Seeds germinate in approx. 7 - 14 days. Keep soil around 20 deg C until germination. Liquid feed the seedlings once germinated.
Once all danger of frost has passed, transplant seedlings when around 5 - 7cm high. Transplant by planting seedlings deep, up to the first set of plant leaves, first carefully removing the original seed leaves. This can speed up fruit production and increase the depth of roots.
Ensure stakes are placed in garden beds at time of transplanting seedlings to minimise root disturbance in the future. Grow in well drained, composted soil, in full sun. Mulch well, and take steps to prevent fruit fly if necessary. Maturity approx. 75 - 85 days.
