Cucurbita pepo
Black Beauty Zucchini gives an abundance of dark green, smooth fruit with excellent flavour, and the flowers are edible as well.
It is an open-pollinated variety introduced in 1957. The bush is semi-upright and quite quick growing. Zucchini is also known as courgette, or summer squash.
Sow seed approx. 2cm deep, in Spring after frost, in moist well drained, well composted, high nitrogen soil. In tropical and sub-tropical areas avoid sowing seed if high humidity is present. Harvest zucchini when they are around 15cm long, Plan for 2 plants per 4-6 people. Maturity approx. 44 - 64 days.
